This is a mid Victorian brass telescope on a very high quality period mahogany and brass tripod. The tripod is supremely stout and rigid, partly due to the very deep profile, and also the more downward force it receives the more rigid it gets !The altitude motion is both free and precise. The azimuth is simply perfect you can increase or decrease by a internal tapered bearing. The all brass scope has a few small dint's which is what you would expect from something nearly 200 years old.The objective is in fine condition as is the rack and pinon focus mount.A selection of eyepieces are included in the sale.
While looking up various makers of Antique scopes i came across a picture of Henry Fitz, a very important telescope manufacturer in America, who used exactly the same design of tripod on a 4.5 inch brass refactor.
The scope gives nice clear images and includes a 90 degree diagonal as well as 3 x other eyepieces.Watson of London made very high end brass refactors as well as other scientific instruments.
I would prefer that this item is collected but may send via carrier to the EU and selected customers in the USA at your own risk.
