Baader Planetarium 2" Baader Safety Cool Herschel White-Light Solar Photographic Prism (2")
The Baader Safety Cool Herschel White-Light Solar Photographic Prism from Alpine Astronomical provides safe full-aperture solar views without image degradation. Utilizing an innovative internal light trap and ceramic tile backplate, complemented by a Baader ND 3.0 and a removable Solar Continuum Filter, the prism reduces intense bright light to safe levels while transmitting the full visible spectrum, revealing solar details without the tinting that is common in many solar filters. Engineered for photographing the sun, Alpine adds three Baader ND filters: ND1.8/1:64, ND0.9/1:8, and ND0.6/1:4 to further dim the image, allowing for longer exposures; and by using them in place of the Continuum filter the prism can be used for visual observations.

Baader 2" Herschel prism for non-compromised solar observation. A new technology for light and heat absorption. Includes a 2" Solar Continuum filter. The Baader Herschel Wedge Prism is considered by many to be the finest on the market. This wedge uses a 2" Zeiss ultra smooth prism which maximizes contrast and sharpness. Baader incorporates many proprietary elements within their wedge, one of which is a specially enhanced optical design for stray light elimination.

As a full-spectrum solar filter that does not selectively filter any of the visual wavelengths, it reveals surface granulation and sunspot detail including penumbra (the less dark outer part of a sunspot, surrounding the dark core); and since the sun is shown in pure white light, the prism further permits the use of additional eyepiece filters to selectively study any bands desired, without the compounding effects of a pre-filter. This iteration of the prism comes with a removable Solar Continuum Filter that transmits in the 540nm wavelength, to further enhance solar surface details. The Continuum also boosts contrast and reduces the effects of atmospheric turbulence to deliver crisp and clear views.

The ceramic back plate and magnesium-alloy housing help to dissipate heat more efficiently than aluminum, while being completely sealed for safety and improved performance. An added feature of the back plate is that because it's translucent, it doubles as a safe solar finder because the defocused image of the sun can be seen through the plate. Its threaded body also enables the 2" snout and eyepiece holder to be removed, permitting the attachment of accessories and allowing for close-coupling of cameras and compatible binoviewers. To keep the prism safe during transport and storage, Alpine includes a hard carrying case with a custom foam interior lining.

Baader 2" Herschel Prism - Version P - Method of Operation:

  • The sunlight enters the telescope unfiltered
  • The design of the Herschel Prism deflects only 4.6% of the light by 90° to the eyepiece barrel
  • The rest of the light is focused outside the Herschel prism; this cannot be used for observation because of the inherent high energy levels
  • A special ceramic, developed for space technology, absorbs the extra light energy without heating its environment
  • The prism housing can be kept closed and the risk of glare or fire is eliminated
  • The Baader "Cool Ceramic Safety" Herschel Prism Ver. P offers the best solution for white light imaging of the Sun
  • This product (BAD-HERSCH-P) is the Photo version, which is optimized for doing photographic imaging of the Sun; for visual observation, order the "V" version.

Easy Positioning of the Sun:

A smart side effect of this Ceramic screen is the possibility of centering the sun in the telescope easily. Just place the Sun disk in the middle of the ceramic screen and you can start observing.

Both the Visual (V) and the Photo (P) versions contain the same Herschel prism. The difference lies in the different filter equipment. The Visual model includes the 2" Neutral Density ND 3.0 and 2" Solar Continuum Filter. The Photo version includes four 2" Neutral Density (ND 0.6, 0.9, 1.8, 3.0) and the 2" Solar Continuum Filter.

Removeable Baader Solar Continuum Filter

  • Transmits in the 540nm spectral region
  • Enhances the visibility of solar granulation and sunspot details
  • No emission and absorption lines
  • Boosts contrast and reduces the effects of atmospheric turbulence
  • Works in all types of telescopes, for both visual observation and imaging
  • On SCTs and achromatic refractors it completely excludes the red and blue wavelengths, centering on the peak visual wavelengths where the telescope optics are sharpest and free from chromatic aberration
  • For digital imaging, the use of an UV/IR cut filter is recommended to completely cut the defocused infrared wavelengths
  • The Solar Continuum filter must be used in conjunction with a primary solar filter such as the Baader Herschel Wedge Prism or permanent eye and equipment damage will result
  • May be removed from the Herschel prism by the user for pure white-light views

Reveals Solar Features

  • Shows surface granulation, and sunspot detail including penumbra (the less dark outer part of a sunspot, surrounding the dark core)
  • Broad-band white-light filter that does not selectively filter any of the visual wavelengths
  • Permits the use of additional eyepiece filters to selectively study any bands desired, without the compounding effects of a pre-filter

Optical Performance

  • Improved resolution, sharpness, and contrast versus glass objective solar filters and films
  • Provides full-aperture views with little or no image degradation
  • Internal baffling and prism rear-face multi-coatings further reduce scatter and maximize contrast
  • Permanently installed precision polished and anti-reflection multi-coated neutral density 3.0 filter ensures that there is no chance of accidentally viewing unfiltered sunlight

Designed to Dissipate Heat

  • Ceramic tile backplate diffuses and dissipates heat, and remains cool during use
  • Multi-layered perforated steel screen diffuses bright light and heat energy
  • Die-cast magnesium body also conducts away the heat more efficiently than aluminum

Built-In Solar Finder

  • The sun's defocused image can be easily seen projected onto the translucent ceramic backplate, permitting fast and easy aiming
  • Eliminates the need to look directly toward the sun

Construction Details

  • Removable 2" nose piece and 2" Baader Clicklock eyepiece clamp
  • Threaded machined magnesium body permits attachment of accessories, and allows for close coupling of cameras and compatible binoviewers
