Other Space Programs

NASA was once the greatest leader in space technology the world over, but all that is about to change. There are equally advanced human civilizations working on space right now. The Chinese have sent probes and satellites to the moon and are currently mapping its terrain. The Japanese have sent probes to the moon and they, along with several other nations are planning manned space missions, even outposts and colonies by 2020. Expect this.

Recently, NASA noted that it is retiring its Space Shuttle program in 2010, which was supposed to be retired sooner, and it may have to be postponed again. Why? Lack of funding and the Constellation Program and Orion Crew Exploration Vehicles (CEV) will not be ready until 2015. That gap in time is unacceptable as many have noted.

Not long ago, someone from China noted a headline in the US News; "US Abandons Space," and he said' "Guess it's an open field for us!" Ouch, that hurts, but he's probably right. China will have the first outpost on the Mars and the Moon at the rate they are ramping up their space program.

Besides if NASA goes along with the plan and if the Space Shuttles are retiring in 2010, and the new space craft will not be ready until 2015 (if everything goes right, which is not possible.) then, it really could end up this way.

The USA spends less than 5% on NASA as it spends on Military Defense, interestingly enough much of the technology learned from NASA is used for both, and much of the hand-me-down technology is used for everything from material science to alternative energy and medicine. It's time for the American People to once again commit to space. Please consider all this.

Is NASA ditching shuttles & and going back to rockets which have evolved from 60s space programs a good thing?

I mean.. dumping men back to earth on the end of a parachute is so old Soviet Union style.. not cool..

whatever launch vehicles nasa use, they have to work, they have to be reliable, they have to be cost-effective, and they need to be able to do different kinds of missions.

the shuttles work, but they have not been reliable, they are extremely expensive to operate, and they are very limited in what they can do. until somebody can think up something better, i am comfortable with nasa's decision.

ppl who think nasa is a waste of money should first see what a pittance nasa get to play with, and see how long the u.s. military take to spend nasa's annual budget (about a week and a half).
