I purchased this package for $5400 with the intent to build my own observatory, but financing fell through and this set in my closet untouched. 

About SBIG STT-8300M

The SBIG STT-8300M Camera with Standard Filter Wheel Pro Package is based on Kodak's KAF-8300, 8.3 megapixels, full frame CCD. This CCD array has 3326 x 2504 pixels at 5.4 microns making it ideal for both short fast optics in high resolution (unbinned) mode and for longer focal lengths it can be binned 2 x 2 or 3 x 3. The CCD has both antiblooming and micro lens technology to improve the effective Quantum Efficiency of the sensor. As a result it can be used in a wide variety of optical configurations.

A filter wheel is designed for STT-8300 sets it apart from other designs. The carousel holds eight 36 mm filters and inserts are available for 1.25" and 31 mm filters. The second unique feature of the STT filter wheel is a positive centering mechanism that precisely re-positions and firmly holds filters in the same position over the CCD no matter how many times the carousel is moved. In the test of the new design, the re-positioning of filters was accurate to better than one pixel (5.4 microns) using an STT-8300 after several complete rotations of the filter carousel. This degree of precision means that flat fields taken after the filter has moved and returned are accurate virtually to the level of a single pixel.

The STT uses the same efficient pin fin heat sink design as the STX series cameras to achieve the most efficient use of space and weight while maximizing the cooling capability of the camera. This type of heat sink is more expensive than typical parallel fin heat sinks, but the results speak for themselves. The STT prototypes achieved an average temperature delta greater than -50C in 5 minutes and a max of -57C in less than ten.

Since its founding, SBIGs mechanical shutters have been designed for highly reliable, even-illumination, of the sensor even at short exposures. Even-illumination is especially critical when taking flat fields with exposures of less than a second or even several seconds. This is very common when taking sky flats. 

SBIGs new STT-8300, the first high speed 8300 camera with user-selectable automatic image processing! Thirty second dark frames were taken at room temperature to accentuate the number of warm pixels. In sample images the first frame is unprocessed, the second frame has a medium filter, and the third frame the most aggressive filter. The result of each image shows fewer bright pixels and each has correspondingly lower noise in the image. The user can select from eight levels of filter strength to suit his needs.

The Kodak KAF-8300 Image Sensor is a 22.5mm diagonal (Four Thirds Format) high performance monochrome full frame CCD (charge-coupled device) image sensor designed for a wide range of image sensing applications including digital imaging.

Each pixel contains blooming protection by means of a lateral overflow drain thereby preventing image corruption during high light level conditions.
